History and Awards

Inner-City Arts was founded in 1989 by Bob Bates and Irwin Jaeger as a non-profit arts education center.

In a rented loft space in an industrial section of downtown Los Angeles, Bob Bates taught 60 students from Ninth Street Elementary School in visual art. Creating fantastical murals, paintings, and visual environments that filled the entire rented loft space, Bob shared his love of art to allow students to expand their world and open their minds through the creative process.

Inner-City Arts has grown from serving 60 students each day in its first year, to more than 8,000 students and their families annually.

The Mark Taper Center/Inner-City Arts is a 44,000-square-foot complex, which houses five art studios/classrooms. The feeling of an oasis is evoked at Inner-City Arts by majestic palm trees, a student-created mosaic fountain and exquisite buildings. We represent a wellspring of hope and peace within a harsh urban environment.

  • Bob Bates, Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Inner-City Arts, received the "Use Your Life Award" from Oprah’s Angel Network. Funding secured through this award will support a new program dedicated to serving upper elementary and middle school students through the arts.
  • Inner-City Arts was honored by receiving the Coming Up Taller Award, in 2001, sponsored by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and National Endowment for the Humanities.
  • The Annenberg Foundation awarded Inner-City Arts a $1 million grant, for Professional Development in the arts for educators, to provide elementary school teachers with meaningful and engaging strategies for incorporating the visual and performing arts into their classroom curriculum.
