Inner-City Arts - Annenberg Professional Development Program

This program provides teachers with meaningful and engaging strategies for incorporating creativity into their classroom curriculums through the visual and performing arts. Teachers explore their own creativity through visual arts, ceramics, music, dance, drama and poetry, and then build bridges between the arts and other disciplines. They learn to create a safe, supportive environment for creative exploration and to harness creative expression to foster literacy, inquiry, critical thinking, joy, and engagement in their students.

Included in the program are the Creativity in the Classroom series, Visiting Scholars and Artists series,

Bridges to Classroom Integration series, a two-year Teachers Institute, and workshops for school staffs and community partners. Working in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District, local universities, museums, performing arts venues, and other arts organizations, the program provides the opportunity for teachers to participate in hands-on arts workshops, lesson planning networks, mentoring sessions, and more.

The program focuses on empowering teachers to facilitate arts and arts-integrated instruction across the curriculum through a standards-aligned, student-centered approach. The State of California Content Standards in the Visual and Performing Arts are embedded in all of the instruction. In addition to bringing the joy of creating in the arts into the repertoire of each teacher enrolled, the program integrates performing and visual arts with the classroom curriculum to foster learning in language arts, history/social studies, math, and science.

The Inner-City Arts–Annenberg Professional Development program trains educators to explore the arts experientially with their students and encourages them to engage their students in ongoing exploration, reflection, inquiry, and research, which build critical thinking skills. The program is designed with the belief that the professional development of teachers is an essential component of the academic success and achievement of our students.
