Arts classes provide children from 32 local elementary schools and two middle schools in the downtown Los Angeles area hands-on activities in the visual arts, dance, drama, animation, music, and ceramics. Each class is approximately 20 hours of instruction and taught by professional artists-educators. In all of the classes we appreciate the unique potential that lies within each child and work toward nourishing that potential. The artists are facilitators who bring students together to provide possibilities so that exploration can take place. Classes give each child in-depth exploration in an art form and emphasize skills that will assist them in all areas of their lives. Language development is strengthened through these arts experiences, and designed to improve student’s academic performance and increase parent and family involvement. As a member of the Community
Arts Partnership Network (ACPN) of the Arts Education Branch
of LAUSD, the arts curriculum is developed in accordance with the State
of California's Visual and Performing Arts Framework, with classes integrated
into the core academic curriculum. Utilizing arts education strategies,
Inner-City Arts implements arts programming to effect improvement in educational
achievement among at-risk English Learners. In the ACPN classes, students
and teachers develop and explore their creativity. Artists and educators
on staff assist teachers with specific challenges for incorporating the
arts into different areas of study for all grades. All Inner-City Arts
classes are created with sequential and grade appropriate lessons. Arts
standards that are listed as goals, or incorporated into the lessons,
are specific to the building blocks necessary for achievement. The ACPN
program 1) links arts with literacy to transform the education of participating
students, 2) provides K-6th grade students in-depth, standards-aligned
learning experiences in the arts, 3) provides differentiated instruction
designed to improve English reading/writing/verbal skills, 4) offers teachers
effective arts-education strategies for teaching within all core subjects,
and 5) offers schools opportunities to impact the full school community
through professional development and additional family activities.
