What we have found is that art works.

Art education improves academic performance. Although the true impact of the arts as an experience cannot entirely be measured, data indicates that the programs offered at Inner-City Arts support both creative and intellectual development.

Evaluation studies demonstrate the correlation between our programs, teacher and parent involvement and student success; and demonstrates the important role that teacher and parent involvement plays in student achievement.

Inner-City Arts responds to a vital need for children living in downtown Los Angeles. Throughout our history, we have been a bright beacon for the thousands of children who live in this urban setting. Our programs have produced results, by increasing Stanford 9 test scores and supporting student achievement.

At Inner-City Arts, there is a direct connection between exploration, creativity, and academic achievement.

Through a 5-year UCLA study conducted by the Evaluation and Research Department, we have monitored student achievement in three key areas: academic achievement, English language development, and self-concept (self-esteem, creativity and motivation). Academic achievement in students attending classes at the Center was measured by improvements in Stanford 9 testing scores in the areas of reading, language arts, and mathematics.

Evaluation results clearly indicate that when the students’ classroom teachers participate in ten or more hours of professional development in our comprehensive teacher-training program within a one-year period, we see a marked increase in student achievement.

Dramatic standardized test scores have been noticed in several key academic areas: an 18% increase in reading scores, an 8% increase in English, and a 25% increase in mathematics scores for students participating for a full year whose teachers participate ten or more hours of professional development annually.

Inner-City Arts continues evaluation of its programs with evaluator, Dr. James Catterall, Professor, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, UCLA, focusing on the important effects of immersion in rich, sustained programs of instruction in the visual arts, specifically looking at the impact of arts-based programs on a child’s worldview.
