UCLA Students participating in Teachers Institute

Teachers Institute

The arts have the power
to transform the world of teaching!

The Teachers Institute is a two-year professional development program for elementary classroom teachers. It is provided in collaboration with the UCLA Center X Teacher Education Program in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, which works to place qualified, prepared new teachers in inner-city schools.

Instruction includes hands-on participation in the arts as well as a methods component that demystifies the process of lesson planning and creating in a classroom environment. Also included are strategies for classroom management, time management, lesson planning, content area integration, assessment in the arts, and a foundational understanding of the State of California Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards.

The goal of this program is to place new teachers in the classroom feeling capable and prepared to bring the arts and creativity into their classrooms to create an enhanced classroom experience for themselves and their students, contributing to deeper engagement for students and a higher retention rate for new teachers.

The Teachers Institute is generously supported by the Clarence E. Heller Foundation.
