Visual Arts

Through the language and vocabulary of the visual arts, students explore a variety of materials—using paint, pastel, and charcoal, they create on paper, stretched canvas and murals. In the visual arts, students learn the power of their own imaginations, and how amazingly capable they are. They build freestanding, three-dimensional structures and mobiles in cardboard, wood, wire and mixed media. They create both individual and group projects.

Each day, at the end of each class period, the children and their instructors view and discuss their responses to artwork. The children experience the line, shape, color, space, texture and rhythm of their creations, as well as that of their peers.

The critique is a time of inspiration and reflection—it is a time for the children to express their thoughts and feelings—a time of seeing and responding. The visual art experience allows students to let go of their fears, and be open to new possibilities.
