“Dramatic arts are particularly effective in strengthening reading, writing, self-confidence, empathy, and tolerance.” (The Arts and Education: New Opportunities for Research. Washington, D.C.: Arts Education Partnership, 2004.)
In high-poverty communities, empathy can be transformative. If you can act your way into someone else’s skin during a theater production, you can imagine yourself in another world, another life—a life that includes achievement and belonging.
“Theater programs also foster improved school attendance, reaching students during critical non-school hours when they are most susceptible to negative influences.” (Transcript of “The State of Arts Education in Los Angeles: Perspectives from Partners.” Arts Education Partnership National Forum: Los Angeles, California, January 30, 2005.)
Inner-City Arts’ state-of-the-art theater gives our students a professional theater experience, and an opportunity to invite their community and parents onto our campus.
Through theater programs, students gain the confidence to see themselves as managing risk, rather than being “at risk.” This is the difference between being an actor on a stage and a victim of circumstances.
